Path to Becoming Carbon Free by 2030
Our carbon reduction strategy begins with a clear understanding of our environmental impact. We established 2019 as our baseline year, collecting comprehensive data on energy use, waste, and transportation to measure our carbon footprint accurately.
Period 24- 25
Focus – Strengthen reductions already underway
Action Taken – ider online meetings, increased reusable PPE, early expansion of hybrid fleet
Period 25 – 28
Focus – Major reductions in travel
Action to be Taken – Majority hybrid fleet, well-established car sharing, electric bike scheme in place
Period 28 – 30
Focus – Completion of transition
Action to be Taken – Fully low- or zero-emission fleet, minimal residual emissions, carbon offsetting only where unavoidable
Our Mission
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Reducing Waste and Moving Away from Single Use Items
We have already taken steps to reduce single use PPE where clinically safe. Washable aprons are now used for non clinical activity. They can be laundered to meet infection control standards, and they remove a significant amount of plastic waste.
Also, reusable shoe covers are provided to carers in place of daily disposable versions. These are practical, hygienic and suitable for regular use. For non-clinical contacts and general community work, we use washable face masks.
Single use medical grade masks continue to be used only when they are required for infection control.Adjusted for weather variations (a colder winter in 2019 led to increased heating energy use). Accounted for the early introduction of hybrid vehicles in late 2019, reducing future Scope 1 emissions. Excluded one-time start-up activities such as equipment installation and office fit-outs to ensure data normalisation. These adjustments ensure that our 2019 baseline reflects realistic, steady-state operations and serves as a sound benchmark for measuring future progress toward carbon neutrality.
Emissions Reduction Targets
- Short-term (within 1 year): Reduce total emissions by 10%.
- Medium-term (within 3 years): Reduce total emissions by 25%.
- Long-term (within 5 years): Reduce total emissions by 50%.
- Net Zero Goal: Achieve full carbon neutrality by 2030.
Our Carbon Reduction Initiatives
-
Working in a Fully Paperless Way
One of the strongest environmental benefits within Hatszz Prestige Care is our paperless operation. We rely entirely on PASS, QCS, Croner HR and Microsoft 365 for rostering, care planning, record keeping, HR documentation, invoicing, training and communication. There is no reliance on printed rotas or care sheets. When clients or families require information in a paper format, we provide it, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Operating in this way removes a large portion of waste and eliminates the carbon cost associated with printing, ink production and regular office deliveries.
Sustainable Office Management
We are continuing to reduce the environmental impact of our two offices. Energy use is managed through efficient lighting, responsible heating controls and clear workplace habits that ensure equipment is turned off when not in use. Recycling facilities are expanded so that all waste, including food, paper, plastic and electrical items, is sorted and disposed of correctly. Procurement ensures that future purchases favour goods with recycled content or low environmental impact. This includes cleaning materials, basic office supplies and any equipment that can be sourced more sustainably.
Supply Chain Considerations
- Working with our Supply Chain Partners We work closely with organisations that supply PPE, mobility products, training services and digital systems. As part of this plan, we will ensure that environmental standards form part of our supplier discussions. Any new supplier will be asked about their carbon commitments and wherever possible we will prioritise those who demonstrate responsible practices.
Monitoring and Reporting Progress
-
Reporting
Our progress is fully measured and reported. We carry out an annual carbon audit using data from multiple sources, including mileage, energy use, PPE consumption and procurement to help form a clear baseline for improvement.
Oversight will sit with our Directors, supported by the Registered Manager, Quality and Compliance Lead, HR and our wider operational management. Carbon reduction will also feature within quarterly management meetings so that the plan remains active throughout the year.
Reducing Travel Emissions
-
Our Approach
Travel is the largest source of carbon emissions in any home care setting. Much of our effort is dedicated to reducing unnecessary journeys and making essential journeys cleaner. We already rely heavily on online meetings for internal discussions. Supervisions, team briefings, training sessions and operational catch ups are almost always held through Microsoft Teams or Zoom. We will continue to embed this as standard practice, reserving in person meetings only for situations where they are clearly required, for example safeguarding reviews or complex staff support. This approach removes a considerable amount of car travel between our London and Luton offices, along with trips made by field supervisors and senior staff
Using Hybrid Vehicles
We are also strengthening the use of hybrid vehicles. Some hybrid vehicles are already in use within the organisation and all future vehicle changes will favour hybrid or electric models. Staff who drive their own cars for work will be encouraged to consider greener options, supported through guidance and mileage incentives. Car sharing is already part of our practice, particularly where carers live near one another or work in the same patches. We are already formalising this with: A simple car share register Pairing staff for suitable routes and Supporting travel arrangements
Using Public Transport and Local Routes
Where geography allows, we will promote walking, cycling and the use of electric bikes – many of the local areas we service are covered by public e-bike rental schemes from providers such as Forest, Lime, or Santander. Staff are supported with the right equipment and clear safety guidance. We encourage the use of public transport for appropriate trips, particularly where direct routes are available, and staff feel confident doing so. Our scheduling system is already a strong tool for carbon reduction. PASS allows us to group care visits together in a way that reduces wasted mileage. As the system continues to develop, we will make full use of routing improvements and geographical mapping so that travel is kept to an essential minimum.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been compiled in accordance with Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21 and relevant government guidance. It reflects our continued commitment to environmental responsibility and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030.
